NOTE: New Orleans Secrets makes its livelihood by presenting the tour we are about to describe. The best way to experience this is to sign up and take the tour yourself. You will hear many behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes that we are not repeating. This chronicle is meant for us to have a record of our adventure, so we can recall it in the years to come.
Our Foodie Tour consisted of five different restaurant stops. Unlike many foodie tours, our tastings would not be small samples. We would be getting mini-meals. Mark personally tested restaurants up and down Magazine Street and found the best. His selections have not changed in five years.
Stop No. 1 was Mahony’s Po-Boy Shop. The “Po Boy,” New Orleans’ signature sandwich, was invented in 1929 when striking streetcar workers were referred to as “poor boys.” Our New Orlean’s Secret Po-Boys included roast beef, onion rings, dressing and debris. Gail also had “The Mahony,” a bright blue cocktail featuring Blue Curacao.

Stop No. 2 was Dat Dog, a hot dog restaurant. What’s that, you say? We went all the way to New Orleans to eat hot dogs? No, we ate Alligator Sausage Hot Dogs with crawfish etouffée. And Gail declared this her favorite of the five meals. Gail also had a Cane Brake Beer, while Russell had homemade Nectar Soda.
Stop No. 3 was Basin Seafood & Spirits. When we first arrived last night, our cabbie Sayid said Drago’s Seafood Restaurant in the hotel had the best charbroiled oysters in New Orleans. Mark said the ones at Basin were even better. These oysters are grilled with Parmesan and Pecorino Butter, and accompanied with a side of crab & crawfish beignets with remoulade sauce.
Stop No. 4 was Joey K’s, a local favorite. Our selection here was Eggplant Napoleon, with a sauce made from chicken, crème and crawfish tails. The side dish was red beans & rice. This was Russell’s favorite of the tour.
Stop No. 5 was Sucre for dessert. We had our choice of several options to end the tour. Gail had Raspberry and Dark Chocolate Gelato. Russell had a Salted Caramel Cupcake. Needless to say, we were stuffed by the end of our tour.
