We are in England! Today’s port was Falmouth, on the southwest corner of Great Britain in Cornwall county. This area is famous for its pasties (meat pies) and clotted cream (a cross between whipped cream and butter). Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to sample either.
Once again, Gail was asked to help escort an excursion. This time it was “Land’s End & St. Ives,” which would take her to the westernmost point of the British Isles. It would be a whopping seven-and-a-half-hour bus ride. Her group did get lunch along the way. Sadly, it did not include any of Cornwall’s specialties – it was fish and chips.
Russell had a free morning, so he developed a cunning plan. He is a huge fan of “Game of Thrones,” and had missed last Sunday’s episode. (We are not allowed to stream video on the ship’s internet.) For almost a week, he has refrained from looking at any news to avoid spoilers.
So this morning, he went ashore with his PC. He planned to find a spot with internet to watch the episode. He passed several cozy pasty shops, trying not to spend any money. He walked all the way to the library, but the Wi-Fi inside wasn’t working. He finally found a park bench outside in the cold that had free Wi-Fi. He connected his PC and… discovered you can’t access HBO in the UK. Sadly, Russell made his way back to the ship.
Russell’s complimentary “Scenic Cornish Drive” excursion in the afternoon was shorter than Gail’s, but it was still a three-and-a-quarter-hour bus ride. Highlights included St. Michel’s Mount and Cornwall’s mining area.
Back aboard ship for the evening, we were able to sneak into the Chef’s Table specialty restaurant again for dinner. The cuisine this time was Mexican, and we got to enjoy one of our favorites – mole sauce.
