[Worldtrippers home] [World Cruise home]
It is no secret that the political situation in the Red Sea has been less than stable, and the travel situation has been less than safe.
At 10:00 this morning, we learned that our itinerary going forward has been revised. Viking’s chairman, Torstein Hagen, appeared in a videotaped message. After we cruise to India, we will bypass the Red Sea, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean. Instead, we will continue south from India and go around the Horn of Africa. Along the way we will have port stops in Mauritius, South Africa, Namibia, Senegal, the Canary Islands and Morocco. From there, we will proceed across the Strait of Gibraltar to Western Europe. We will arrive in London (Greenwich) on May 9 as originally scheduled.
This will be the third time we have missed seeing Petra (a site made famous in “Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade”). In 2001 it was because of 9/11. In 2020 it was because of COVID-19. This year it is because of the Israel-Hamas War. Oh well.
On the other hand, we are very excited about the new itinerary. As one guest said, “I could not have designed a better world cruise.” We look forward to having new adventures and sharing them on our blog.
