Rhino and hippo
Kapama Private Game Reserve
At Kapama River Lodge, we are scheduled for two game drives every day: early morning and late afternoon. This is because the animals are only active when it is not too hot. After a few hours to unpack, followed by afternoon tea, we already had our first game drive.
We are grouped with two other couples. Daniel (originally from New Zealand) and Charlotte (originally from the UK) currently live in Dubai. They met on Bumble. Marc (originally from Zimbabwe) and Georgina (originally from the UK) are newlyweds on their honeymoon. They also met on Bumble. Our guide is Nevermind and our tracker is Timba.
Here is what we saw on our first game drive.
Even on our initial drive from the airport into the reserve, we saw giraffes…
… and impalas
Our tracker, Timba (left), and our guide, Nevermind (right)
While Nevermind drives, Timba sits way in the front and searches for animals
An African buffalo
The absolute highlight of the day was seeing a rhino and her baby. The baby is less than two months old. This is a once-in-a-lifetime sighting.
When momma went to cool herself off in a mudbath, baby went right along
At dusk, we saw hippos
Our afternoon game drive continued well past sunset
After dark, Nevermind and Timba served drinks and snacks under the stars. We had so much food today, we skipped dinner back at the lodge!
