April 1, 2025 afternoon
The river
These reeds indicate there is a river flowing underneath
For our last afternoon game drive, Nevermind and Timba drove us to another remote area of Kapama Game Reserve: the river. The goal was to look for crocodiles. We didn’t end up spotting any crocodiles, but what we saw instead was thrilling.
Here are the highlights of our afternoon…
A kudu. The number of curls in his horn reveal his age – about two years per curl
A crowned hornbill
More zebras
Note each of these zebras has a bird on its back. These are oxpeckers, and they have a symbiotic relationship with zebras and giraffes. The bird eat the ticks that infest the animals. The animals get cleaned, and the birds get food.
A magnificent white rhinoceros
As we crossed the river, Charlotte got everyone humming the theme from “Indiana Jones”
The highlight of the day, and one of the reasons we came to the river – a full-grown leopard emerged from nowhere and walked right in front of our truck
The leopard walked into the tall grass and completely disappeared
Our final afternoon coffee break. Nevermind and Timba always bring out an impressive display of liquor
We had our coffee break on a wide-open savanna, where a herd of impala were bedding down for the night
A gorgeous sunset and a new moon
