Melbourne, Australia: Arcades and Edibles

Melbourne by day and night

Melbourne is the capital of the Australian state of Victoria and the second-most populous city in the country (behind Sydney). For our second day here, we stayed within the city and escorted two different Viking excursions.

Russell escorted “Laneways & Arcades of Melbourne,” a 3.5-hour walking tour through the city with a snack at the end. Gail escorted “Melbourne Culinary Journey,” a 5.5-hour walking tour through various eating establishments. This city is huge! Strangely enough, we both ended up seeing many of the same places, though we never crossed paths.

Russell’s tour included a ride on the city tram. Years ago, a Melbourne mayor decided that public transit within the main city should be free for all.

Melbourne is famous for its art-deco architecture, its graffiti murals, and its Victorian-era covered walkways (arcades). When we compared notes afterwards, we discovered that we had taken photos of the same things. The main difference was the food we sampled.
