Sydney, Australia: 18-Mile E-Bike Ride

Grant of Sydney Harbour Bike Tours fits Gail for her e-bike

Last night the Viking Neptune relocated from Circular Quay to White Bay Cruise Terminal. White Bay is much farther from Sydney’s tourist areas. It didn’t matter, because today we were taking a private excursion.

With another couple, we took a taxi to Sydney Harbour Bike Tours. Here (literally in a back alley), we were met by Grant, who had a set of German E-bikes all ready for us. We were going to take a four-hour tour through Sydney Harbour.

Our ride took us to Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay and Rose Bay, ending up at Vaucluse before riding back. We rode a total of 18 miles. According to Gail, all of it was uphill in both directions.

Gail rode in “Power” mode (maximum assist), usually in first gear. Russell rode in “Eco” mode (Minimum assist), usually in seventh gear. It was definitely a route for experienced riders, and Gail was continuing through sheer will power by the time we returned.

A map showing where we went. The Rocks (where the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House sit) is in the center left. Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay and Rose Bay are in the lower half. Vaucluse is in the center right.

Our riding conditions varied greatly. Sometimes we were in a dedicated bike lane, and sometimes we competed with traffic.

Sometimes we had a nice paved bike lane, and sometimes there was no bike lane at all

At Woolloomooloo, we got to ride past an amazing sculpture park

On the plus side, we had another day of superb weather, and the scenery was gorgeous. In fact, it started raining in the afternoon right after we reboarded the ship.

But the skies cleared again as we sailed out of Sydney Harbour at 6:00 pm. One advantage of leaving from White Bay Cruise Terminal is that we got to sail under Sydney Harbour Bridge, before passing the Sydney Opera House for the last time. Our fellow guests universally wished we could have stayed longer here.
