Singapore: Bird Paradise

The Viking Neptune is docked right next to the resort island of Sentosa. A skyway runs directly over our ship.

For our third and final day in Singapore, Gail and Russell were both able to escort the same excursion: “Mandai Bird Paradise.” This took us back to Mandai Wildlife Reserve (where we had seen the Night Safari two nights ago). While we rode on separate buses, we were able to meet up and tour the park together.

Mandai Bird Paradise covers 42 acres and is home to 400 different species of birds. The park is divided into different areas including “Penguin Cove,” “Amazonian Jewels,” “Australian Outback,” “Heart of Africa,” “Wings of Asia” and “Mysterious Papua.” We were able to spend several hours here, though the day was quite hot.

We were particularly fascinated by this Shoebill (named after the Dutch clog) that was just standing on a building roof

Once again, we ran short on time at the end. Gail tried looking for the “Häagen-Dazs” ice cream vendor she had missed at the Night Safari, but she couldn’t find it. (Our ship has gelato and sorbet, but no ice cream.) Similarly, we had no time for one last spicy noodle bowl in the cruise terminal before we had to re-board the ship.

Last year, we only sailed the first half of the Viking World Cruise. Singapore was where we disembarked and went home. So from this point forward, we will be discovering new ports and new adventures.

We are about to hit several port days in a row with no days at sea. Next stops: Malaysia and Thailand.

Gail’s favorite part of the park: you can get bao (Chinese buns) shaped like penguins!
