Langkawi, Malaysia

“Langkawi” refers to both a big island and an archipelago of 99 islands (note the Viking Neptune on the right)

Langkawi is an island off the northwestern coast of Malaysia. For our port day here, Russell and Gail were assigned to escort different excursions.

Gail accompanied the four-hour “Discover the Ecosystem of the Mangroves.” Her group sailed along the Kilim River (a UNESCO site), watching eagles dive as they caught fish. She visited a cave full of bats. And she visited a fish farm.

Gail’s cruise took her through Kilim Geoforest Park

Remember: Gail was bitten by a monkey in Indonesia

Kelawar Cave (Remember: Gail was peed on by a bat in Singapore)

Gail's cave excursion had some challenging bits

The Floating Fish Farm had several species of fish, including stingrays

Russell accompanied the four-hour “Jungle Trek.” An hour-plus bus ride took his group to “Crocodile Farm,” though they didn’t stay there. Instead, they walked down the road and into the jungle for an hour hike. This tour was classified “demanding,” and between the hot weather and some steep inclines, it was a good workout.

Some really cool vines in the jungle

Vines also wrap themselves around trees

Russell’s excursion also had some challenging bits

Russell’s wildlife was limited to a termite mound and a tree lizard (Russell also saw a monkey high up in the tree canopy, but couldn’t get a photo of it)

When Russell returned to the cruise terminal, he expected to see Gail but didn’t find her in the shopping area. So he took the long walk back to the ship but didn’t find her in our stateroom. So he took the shuttle back out to the cruise terminal to wait for her. Halfway there, he saw Gail walking back to the ship and yelled to her to turn back. We finally met back up in the cruise terminal, where there were several shops and restaurants.

At “Spice Garden,” we had a wonderful lunch of Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken. Gail introduced several other guests to Mango Lassi (a yogurt-based drink) and they all ended up buying one, much to the delight of the proprietor. We hope to come back here next year and see if the proprietor remembers us.
