Leixões, Portugal

Leixões, Portugal (2023)

Today’s post is a bit unusual. Our port today was Leixões, Portugal. Leixões (pronounced “lay-SHOYSH”) is the seaport associated with the bigger city of Porto. Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal (after Lisbon), and one of Europe’s oldest cities. Porto is famous for its fortified wine – “Port wine” is named after the city.

Today’s post is unusual because we never left the ship today. We were not assigned to any excursions. Gail is feeling a bit worn out and under the weather. And we are starting to look at the daunting task of packing to go home, after almost four months aboard ship. So we took today as a “catch-up” day.

We have been to both Leixões and Porto on previous cruises. Since we didn’t blog about those trips, we can share some photos now.

In 2022 we visited Porto on Viking’s “Trade Routes of the Middle Ages” cruise, during the launch of the Viking Mars.

Last year we returned on the 2023 Viking World Cruise, aboard the Viking Sky. Since we had already seen Porto, we decided to stay in Leixões this time around.

At Leixões, there is a beautiful beach just across from the cruise terminal (2023)

We walked to the Fort of Leça da Palmeira, built in 1638 (2023)

And we had lunch in the City Park (2023)

A symbol of this area is the sculpture “She Changes,” also known by the locals as “anémona” (“the anemone”). This magnificent sculpture moves and undulates with the wind. (2023)
