[Worldtrippers home] [World Cruise home]
Yesterday, May 4, was the final sea day on our four-month world cruise. A few days ago, Gail helped host an arts & crafts event that showcased her students’ work. Today, Russell gave his final lecture. (All told, we have presented 50 lectures and workshops on this cruise, and Gail has taught 350 needle felting creations.) Viking celebrated the final sea day with an amazing brunch that took up the entire pool deck. Guests are definitely becoming misty-eyed as the cruise enters its final days.
Today, May 5, our port was Saint-Malo, France. This historic walled city, on the northwest coast of France on the English Channel, is a popular tourist destination.
Unfortunately, both Gail and Russell are currently under the weather. It may be a post-adrenaline crash from finishing our work. It may be from working so hard over the past few days. It may be from Russell’s bike ride in the rain a few days ago. It may be from the sudden weather change from hot sun to cold rain. Or it may be that we simply caught the bug that’s going around the ship. In any event, we are both currently wearing masks as a courtesy to other guests.
With more rain in today’s forecast, Gail was in no mood to leave the ship. Russell took the tender into port for one reason: to find a pharmacy and buy Gail some cold medications. (Both of us, the ship shops, and the onboard medical center are completely out of cold medications.)
The good news is that Saint-Malo is a gorgeous city, with medieval walls and streets that ooze historical charm. The better news is that Russell successfully navigated the maze of streets to find the pharmacy. The bad news is that the pharmacy was closed on Sunday.
After Russell returned empty-handed, he recommended that Gail post a notice on Facebook. Surely some fellow guests aboard ship have cold medications they no longer need. Literally within minutes, we were blessed with numerous neighbors who dropped every kind of cold medication off at our stateroom door. We now have Nyquil, Dayquil, Tylenol, cough medicine and cough drops. What an incredible community we have aboard ship!
